(~10:00PM): An 82-y.o. pilot crashes his unregistered ultralight and is killed. [NOTE: this aviation incident is NOT included in the NTSB aviation accident database]

(~10:14PM): Lancair IV-P turbine departs San Diego Montgomery for Phoenix Deer Valley in good weather, crashes minutes later. Witnesses reportedly saw the kitbuilt high-performance plane spinning before it fell from the sky.

(~2:35PM): Piper PA31 radios the tower that they are low on fuel and 12-miles north of the airport. ATC assisted but pilot crashed into trees 2-miles north of the airport.

(~2:27PM): Vortex gyrocopter doing mutiple takeoffs and landings crashes, and is later found 50-feet west of the runway near the mid-runway area.

(~6:25PM): Piper PA31 (Part-135) hauling cargo as AMF3853 in IMC impacts terrain while diverting to Phoenix. Icing was being reported in the area. The pilot had requested lower but was denied due to minimum vectoring altitudes.

(~2:00PM): Hummel H5 (amateur-built) takes off and at 300′ AGL begins to roll right, then crashes and is consumed by fire. The aircraft had accumulated 3.8-hrs total flight time as part of the initial Phase 1 operating limitations.

Libby, MT

(~12:02AM): Beech B100 finishing a 4-hr company flight from AZ collides with trees. The pilot had been on an IFR flight plan, started a GPS approach, then cancelled IFR 7-miles south of the airport.  A police officer heard the aircraft over the downtown and turn south toward the airport. The pilot had no pilot certificate.

(~12:30PM): Mooney MO20 departs Santa Ynez, CA for Mammoth Lakes, CA, in good weather. His family reports him missing. Target disappeared off of radar. The search was suspended on 12/27 due to snow and weather.

Parkton, NC

(~3:32PM): Piper PA28 on an IFR flight plan in IMC is being vectored for the ILS RWY04 approach at Fayetteville, NC. The pilot became disoriented and/or the navigation system was failing. ATC proceeded to offer many headings and other navigational assistance to an alternate airport, but the aircraft crashed into a wooded area.

(~10:00AM): Piper PA31 departs Mesa, AZ at 8:18AM for Troutdale, OR. Breaks up in-flight while cruising at FL240. Wreckage was scattered over a 1,500′ area.

(~6:05PM): Beech BE90 departs AMA in IMC on an IFR flight plan, and is cleared to FL210, talking to Albuquerque Center. Communications are lost. There aircraft debris is found with components in several directions, as much as a half-mile from the central fuselage.

(~11:02AM): Delfin L29 operated by CNR Aircraft was given a ride to the winner of a fundaiser raffle. A half-hour into the jet flight, the L29 crashed.

(~8:16PM): MBB BK117 helicopter (EMS) is repositioning to pick up a transfer patient on a company VFR flight plan in light snow conditions. The pilot radios that he is aborting the mission due to flight conditions, then crashes.

(~7:50PM): Diamond DA40 is cleared by VLD ATCT and departs Valdosta to the east in IMC. Eleven minutes later the pilot radios he is in trouble. He crashes into trees 7-miles from the airport. The pilot had just over 200-hours total flight experience.

(~1:34PM): Cessna C421 twin yaws sharply left shortly after takeoff, pitches nose up, then rolls and crashes nose down. Right propeller blade was destroyed by fire; left propeller blades were in the feathered position. Pilot had 175-hours of multi time.

(~2:38PM): Beech BE58 operated by Bemidji Aviation Services to do a pipeline patrol impacts terrain in VMC.

(~unknown): Sport Racer (amateur-built) departs RWY21 in VMC. Wreckage is later found 1-mile north of the airport.

(~6:19PM): Piper PA46 crashes near his destination airport in low clouds and fog while attempting the RNAV (GPS) RWY36 approach. Two couples are killed after a Florida trip.

(~7:50PM): Beech P35 crashes while maneuvering to land at a private airstrip during thick fog and low visibility.

Kahului, HI

(~7:00PM): Cessna C172S flies erratically, tells ATC he will make a right 360-degree turn and come back inbound, but instead makes a left descending turn and disappears over the ocean. The pilot and most of the plane were not found.

(~2:20PM): Bell 47G helicopter travels at low altitude in ‘helicopter visual conditions, crashes into trees and a swamp after a loud noise. Passenger survived w/o injuries.

(~1:18PM): Thorp T18 (amateur built) breaks up 19-minutes into  its flight. Radar tracks showed 8,300′, then 7,200′ before disappearing. Only the fuselage has been found.

Apollo Beach, FL

(~3:15PM): Robinson R22B helicopter operated by Fly N Choppers, based in Clearwater, FL. Witnesses saw the helicopter flying at 500′ AGL along the beach when they heard a loud bang. A rotor separated and the helicopter crashed in the bay.

(~5:15PM): Ercoupe 415C collides with powerlines while landing in VMC. Pilot was 92-yrs-old, and his last airman medical clearance had lapsed in June.

(~11:00AM): Taylorcraft BC12D strikes powerlines while on approach to an unimproved airstrip. The 69-yr-old pilot had used the airstrip in the past, when the powerlines were buried. Above-ground powerlines had recently been erected.

(~3:58PM): Hughes 369 helicopter lost engine power during long-line powerline construction in VMC. The helicopter impacted terrain, injuring the pilot. The worker on the long-line was killed.

(~3:37PM): RV6 (kitbuilt) departs the Lebanon, OR airport and minutes later crashes after the right wing separated.

(~11:08PM): Robinson R44 helicopter fuels up and prepares for a late-night departure, after the tower closed. While maneuvering at the fuel station, his tail-rotor strikes the roof of the fuel station, causing a flash and explosion.

(~1:00PM): Piper PA28 departs the Fillmore, UT airport in VMC, then impacts terrain 11-miles to the east.

(~unknown): Piper PA28 impacts flat desert terrain. Pilot’s husband reported she had been acting ‘paranoid’ before going flying in her airplane.

(~3:30PM): Coot A-Amphib (amateur-built) pilot on his third flight of the day in his renovation project decides to go up for a local flight to check out the operation of the landing gear. Five minutes into the flight, while turning base to final, it rolls and pitches down to the impact.

(~6:20PM): Piper PA28 is arriving after an eighty-minute flight in marginal VMC with haze, an hour after twilight. The pilot sets up for RWY28 but crashes in trees 1.25-miles east of the runway approach end.

(~5:15PM): Cessna C310B twin departs RWY24 at an uncontrolled airport and impacts a heavily wooded area a mile southwest.

(~2:00PM): RAF SE5A Replica (experimental) departs RWY26 at Front Range airport and climbs at a slow rate. Pilot calls ATC to return to land. While downwind in the pattern, the aircraft enters a spiral descent, and impacts a wheatfield.

(~6:18AM): Piper PA32 operated by Star Marianas Air, Inc. departs with four paying passengers and returns. Pilot conducts another engine runup, then does an intersection departure. Crashes on takeoff. The pilot had 1,200 hours total flight time.

(~6:55PM): Cessna C172K is IMC on an IFR flight plan. Two hours into the flight, while being set up for an ILS RWY01 approach, communications were lost. The wreckage was found in a salt marsh.

(~4:35PM): Jabiru J250-SP (LSA) is flown by a commercial pilot husband and his student pilot wife. She then does solo pattern practice while he observes from the ground. On her second landing she bounces, increases power, goes nose high, then enters a descending left turn before impact.

(~1:20PM): Grumman AA1B impacts terrain near its airport of departure. A witness saw it in a steep descent with a slight left turn, then a tight right turn that developed into a spin.

(~1:45PM): Cessna C182D impacts terrain 2-hours after departing from Stevensville, MT to Pinedale, WY. The flight crashed 35-miles W of Pinedale, at 10,150′ elevation.

(~4:45PM): Cessna C172N impacts a non-airport vehicle during takeoff, then continues climbing to about 200′ AGL before pitching down and crashing.

(~7:00AM): Grumman AA1 departs RWY03 in VMC after a frosty night. Impacts terrain 3-miles N of the airport.

(~5:15PM): Piper PA32 levels off at 1,000′ with an engine problem just after takeoff. Tries to return to the airport but crashes into a house, then is consumed in a post-crash fire.

(~7:20PM): Cessna C421 twin breaks up in-flight. It had departed on an IFR flight plan from Salinas, CA to Omaha, NE. Leveled off at FL270 and communications with ATC were normal. Then began a left 15-degree turn with no further ATC communications. Then, a gradual descent before becoming a cluster of primary radar targets. Scattered debris field.

(~7:45AM): FedEx C208 cargo flight. Shortly after takeoff the engine fails and oil fouls the windscreen. Pilot attempts an emergency landing in a field, and impacts trees.

(~10:00AM): Amateur-built Sorensen Sprint (ultralight) collides with trees during an aborted landing. Pilot had departed the same private strip approx. 45-minutes earlier.

(~6:00PM): Twin Cessna C310 with known engine and landing gear issues is taken for a short hop to a nearby unlighted grass strip. Oil pressure was lost on the right engine; they impact trees and become a fireball.

(~5:10PM): USLAC Hornet crashes while performing low and slow maneuvers. A witness saw the passenger smiling and waving just before the aircraft climbed to avoid powerlines.

(~6:40AM): Aerospatiale AS355 helicopter departs from owner’s home base in dark fog, with no flightplan. Minutes later, impacts a tree at 75′ AGL. The  repositioning flight was to pick up passengers for a pipeline patrol flight.

(~3:57PM): Grumman C1A crashes into terrain forty minutes after takeoff. The flight wa to deliver 900 gallons of diesel to a mining operation.

(~6:00AM): Aeropro CZ A240 (LSA) departs into low clouds IMC, has no filed flightplan, and crashes into the ridge adjacent to the airport. Aircraft consumed in fire.

(~9:27PM): Cessna C172 with a low-hour pilot on a night VFR cross-country crashes a rental plane into trees. Weather included some areas of low visbility due to rain and mist.

(~7:10PM): Piper PA28 collides with desert terrain while flying night VMC. The owner had flown his spouse to Benson, and was returning to his home in Imperial, CA. The flight was cruising west of Tucson at 8,500′ when it made a 360-degree turn and crashed.

(~11:16AM): Airborne Windsports XT-912 (ultralight trike) takes off and at 50′ AGL begins to bank right., then noses in, killing pilot and passenger.

(~unknown): Piper PA18 departed with a student pilot who was also the owner). Archived radar indicates it departed Soldotna airport at 1:37AM, and was last tracked over water an hour later. The plane and pilot remain missing.

(~4:58AM): Piper PA23 Aztec twin, impacts water during a scheduled cargo flight between islands. Operated as Rainbow International Airlines. The surviving passenger reports the pilot had been slowly descending under low clouds when he crashed. Also, she had flown the (cargo) flight many times before.

(~11:55AM): Bell 206B helicopter impacts guy wires for a broadcast tower. The owner was commuting back to his home heliport in VMC. The impact was witnessed by a technician working on the tower.

(~8:00PM): Bell 407 helicopter on a corporate flight for an all-day golfing trip. Returns one passenger to Somerville, NJ, then a second passenger to Elmira, NY. Carrying the last two passengers on a flight to White Plains, NY, low IMC is encountered. It crashes in heavy woods near a freeway.

(~1:44PM): Piper PA32 crashes in low cloud conditions near the summit of Laramie Peak, 51-miles short of the destination airport in Casper. Flight had begun in Texas, six hours earlier and had flown for two hours since a fuel stop in Dodge City, KS.

(~4:45PM): Amphib Grumman G44 positioning to pick up a hunting party cartwheels three times on a glassy lake in low cloud/fog conditions.

(~9:45AM): Beech A36 on an IFR flight plan encounters weather and is issued a diversion to TRL. Crashes. The pilot had limited hours, and no indicated flight time in the previous six months.

(~7:58AM): Bell 407 helicopter departs on a company flight plan into low IMC with fog. It was a post-maintenance flight. He crashes just after takeoff.

(~9:30AM): Mustang II FB (Kitbuilt) returns to the airport after reporting low oil pressure and is low and slow on final, as if stalling. Impacts a ridge line less than a mile from the runway threshold.

(~11:20AM): Cirrus SR22 on vectors for an RNAV30 approach to GYY. Shipped by Chicago TRACON, but never comes up on Tower. Crashes into trees near 1-mile final. (900′ overcast and visibility 5)
