A Table Showing the ASPM-77 Airports (Peak Years, Traffic Declines, and Trends Toward Airline Monopolies)

ASPM stands for Aviation System Performance Metrics. This is a set of 77 airports defined by FAA to assess overall aviation system performance. Included are all 35 OEP airports, plus dozens of lesser commercial hubs and a few of the most prominent GA airports. These airports are the backbone of the U.S. aviation system.

The list below was compiled using FAA data available online. It is designed to provide quick access to further info on each of these airports (just click on the green-box links, e.g. CLT), and to present a concise overview showing three key trends in U.S. aviation:

  1. U.S. air traffic operations have seen a very large decline, particularly in the last fifteen years. On average commercial operations at the ASPM airports peaked in 1999, while total operations (commercial plus GA plus military) peaked in 2002.
  2. Local operations have nearly disappeared from most of these commercial airports. General Aviation (GA) pilots are flying a lot less, and FAA has been aggressively focusing most of these airports toward exclusive commercial flying, while relocating small planes to ‘reliever’ airports.
  3. The 1978 deregulation of the U.S. airline industry has slowly produced dozens of commercial airports where a single airline has a virtual monopoly. At nearly every ASPM airport, the single dominant airline selling commercial passenger services often provides more than ten times the number of flights offered by the next largest airline.

Methodology…
ASPM Airports operations data were copied from FAA’s ATADS webpage. Data was available for all years, from 1991 through 2013, with two exceptions: GYY and SWF data begin a few years later.
Airline operations at each ASPM airport were copied from FAA’s Performance Based Navigation (PBN) Dashboard webpage. The search box at the top of the Dashboard page was used to generate reports for each airport, and the airline operations data was then copied from the ‘Operations’ tab.
In this data presentation, a note at the top-right of each airport listing shows the percentage of total operations flown by all mainline passenger airlines combined. This includes the following airline codes: AAL, ASA, COA, DAL, FFT, NWA, TRS, UAL, USA, and VRD. Note that regionals, commuters and feeders are not included in this count, as they may be flying for more than one mainline carriers. Also, airports with low mainline percentages tend to be targets for Hub abandonment (e.g, KCLE).
Hub Dominance identifies the mainline airline with the largest percentage of total airport operations. The figure shows what percentage of all mainline airline ops are flown by the specified mainline airline. This figure is highlighted when it exceeds 50%.
‘Commercial Ops’ is defined as the sum of all Air Carrier (AC) and Air Taxi (AT) counts. The brown figure shows the percentage of December 2013 operations that were commercial flights (computed from ATADS data).
A comparison of Commercial Ops vs Total Ops provides insight into where the airport falls on a user spectrum, from pure-GA to pure-Commercial.
The trend toward excluding GA use of the airport for local pattern work can be tracked by viewing the progression from 1991 to Peak Year to 2013.
Traffic growth/decline trends are summarized and in all cases (except KCLT) show decline. A heavy red box is used to mark declines of 40% or greater from Peak Year; yellow highlighting marks declines of 25-49%; gold highlighting marks declines 50% or greater.
