ASPM stands for Aviation System Performance Metrics. This is a set of 77 airports defined by FAA to assess overall aviation system performance. Included are all 35 OEP airports, plus dozens of lesser commercial hubs and a few of the most prominent GA airports. These airports are the backbone of the U.S. aviation system.
The list below was compiled using FAA data available online. It is designed to provide quick access to further info on each of these airports (just click on the green-box links, e.g. CLT), and to present a concise overview showing three key trends in U.S. aviation:
- U.S. air traffic operations have seen a very large decline, particularly in the last fifteen years. On average commercial operations at the ASPM airports peaked in 1999, while total operations (commercial plus GA plus military) peaked in 2002.
- Local operations have nearly disappeared from most of these commercial airports. General Aviation (GA) pilots are flying a lot less, and FAA has been aggressively focusing most of these airports toward exclusive commercial flying, while relocating small planes to ‘reliever’ airports.
- The 1978 deregulation of the U.S. airline industry has slowly produced dozens of commercial airports where a single airline has a virtual monopoly. At nearly every ASPM airport, the single dominant airline selling commercial passenger services often provides more than ten times the number of flights offered by the next largest airline.
