  • (7/25/2012)Aviation Groups Oppose FAA-Mandated Long Island Helicopter Routes
Article posted at nbaa.org. Political pressure resulted in FAA enacting a rule requiring helicopter flights on the north side of Long Island to follow a route roughly a mile offshore. This rule is temporary, to last two years (until late summer 2014). NBAA is concerned that the new rule might set a precedent.
An excerpt: Dean Saucier, NBAA northeast regional representative, said there is a concern that if the FAA mandate is upheld, it could lead to similar rulings, or even legislation affecting not only helicopters, but also fixed-wing aircraft. “We fear this could be the tip of the iceberg,” he said. “If legislators start to use methods like this to restrict air traffic, we are going to have larger, more onerous issues.”

  • (11/18/2011)A letter to the East Hampton Town Supervisor & Town Board
This letter from East Hampton Conservators provides some background on the airports history, development, and the problem of loss of airport control via FAA’s grant obligations.
An excerpt: “One way the local affected population thinks of the increased, and increasing, presence of overhead aircraft at all hours of the day and night is that we’re “under attack” by helicopters and jets—two types of aircraft that just didn’t exist when the small, local airport we’re supposed to have was constructed. However, what we now have is a major airport that serves only a few residents and visitors, less than 1% of the population, but disturbs a broad swathe of the population within East Hampton and beyond its borders. … EHA has become a major metropolitan airport, with peak capacity comparable to Islip MacArthur Airport. Islip is designated by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration)as an Official Metropolitan Airport, in the same category as JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark. Islip has an average of 499 operations (takeoffs and landings)per day. EHA has a summer average of 400 operations per day, based on figures available on the EH Town website.”
