A collection of webpages has been constructed, one for each state. Each page lists data for selected airports, including all the busier airports, all public use airports with control towers, and all known airports with noise, lead, and other impact issues. Each page presents in-depth data on the most significant airports (averaging sixteen per state), followed by a concise list of a few other, less significant airports. In total, nearly 1,500 U.S. public use airports are listed.
As noted at the bottom of the table below, there are roughly 4,700 public use airports in the United States. Thus, the aiR State Airports Lists present data on roughly 30% of all U.S. public use airports.
*AIP is the ‘Airport Improvement Program’, which collects taxes primarily from airfares and air cargo. ‘AIP Subsidy’ is a ballpark average showing how many dollars FAA grants for airport construction projects, compared with just how busy the airport is. It is calculated by dividing the four-year average annual AIP funds by the total airport operations for the latest year. All original data came from FAA (or DoT) records and web pages. For nearly 800 airports, data includes: the airport name & location, airport acreage, four nearby instrument airports, numbers of based aircraft, annual operations counts (including percentage of local traffic when 33% or greater, to help identify training airports), traffic history (peak year, change since peak year, etc.), ATC status (FAA Tower vs. Contract Tower vs. No Tower, and hours per day), and data related to AIP spending for the last four years. Each airport listing also includes many links to websites that show airport history, airport maps and data, weather history, actual (nearly live) air traffic, scheduled airline flights, and much more. Most of the content is self-explanatory; one exception is ‘AIP Subsidy’.*
Note that the State Names are all hyperlinked; click on any state name to open that State Airport List into a new window. Alaska and Hawaii are not included in this list, but airport lists are viewable via the links.
